| There aren't many natural pairs in the world, but those that do exist are generally considered perfect - man and wife, bluegrass and banjo, Christmas and snow ... and now, Bobby Osborne and Jesse McReynolds. Neither of these men need much in the way of introduction; if you've even been a casual bluegrass or country fan and aren't familiar with the names "Osborne" or "McReynolds," it might be time to schedule a doctor's appointment and have a pulse taken. Both are obvious pillars in the kingdom of bluegrass, both are mandolin players of extraordinary merit and each is a huge fan of the other. Masters Of The Mandolin is a project that has been kicked around in the backs of these two great musical minds for many years now; erhaps it was all the touring and recording, perhaps it was the responsibility that comes with being musical legends, but for whatever reason, these two great musicians have never had the chance to record together. In essence, then, a great wrong has been righted. This album works on every imaginable level. Some might wonder how well two very different styles would meld; Jesse is known for his difficult and complicated crosspicking, Bobby for his tasteful and melodic phrasing. However, you'll only have to hear a few moments of Masters Of The Mandolin to dispel any doubts. These two masters compliment one another in every imaginable way. The playing is obviously superb, the emotional commitment and the respect these two share for one another jumps off the album and the chosen material is perfect for their combined talents. Very few will be able to listen to this album and not be moved; it's a wonderful case of the end result living up to any expectation a fan could have. Bobby Osborne and Jesse McReynolds ... two legends in their own right, probably too busy as individual trailblazers to ever record together until now. But, some pairs are a natural and some moments of glory are well worth the wait. All hail these two great masters! |
